Learn how your child learns to more meaningfully engage with them.
For over a decade I held leadership and management positions in investment banking, marketing strategy and international development. I have a MBA from Harvard Business School and have worked and lived in numerous countries across North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. But nothing quite prepared me for parenthood.
I wanted a roadmap for raising children. I needed a playbook for busy parents – a clever place where I could get real answers from real experts. I wanted to learn what the experts knew – on my terms. At the time, I had three children under the age of five – I was short on time and needed quick reads. No excess. Just the important stuff – tell me what to know, do and buy.
Then, I started teaching with teachers at my children’s preschool and saw how magical they were…local heroes who knew how to navigate any child in any situation because they understood the science of how children learned. I wanted to learn from them to be a better parent. So I asked them to answer my long list of questions. And that’s how Plinkit was born.
As my kids grow, I’ll have more questions. You’ll have more questions. Let’s find the answers together and learn what the experts know.
P.S. – Got questions? Send them my way.
Good thing I had smart teacher friends. I asked them to write answers to my questions. Then I asked them to write answers to my friends’ questions. The questions snowballed. And soon they asked their smart teacher friends to join the bandwagon.
Before we knew it, we had childhood experts from San Francisco’s leading preschools, teachers with decades of classroom experience, education professionals and learning specialists with advanced degrees. And then we found savvy user-experience designers to translate all that brilliance into something parents and teachers could practically use. Bite-size and action-oriented.
Not shy about it – it’s a rock star team. Real teachers, real practitioners, real doers.
We categorized things according to five basic child development skills. Every child uses these skills. Every parent and teacher wants to know how to strengthen them.
Critical Thinking: Problem solving, thinking outside-the-box and asking questions. Categorizing, seeing patterns and themes and strengthening memory.
Social + Emotional: Building a diverse emotional vocabulary to promote self-awareness, self-control and self-expression. Finding solutions to social challenges.
Language + Literacy: Learning to express oneself and to communicate with others. Introducing robust vocabulary, making word-play fun and instilling a love for reading.
Creativity + Imagination: Making sense of the world and exploring possibility. Discovering new abilities and interests, practicing social skills, trying out diverse roles and working through questions and feelings.
Fine Motor + Gross Motor: Improving dexterity, physical control and spatial awareness. Developing attention and focus.
Life needs to be simpler. Information needs to be efficient and useful. So we streamlined things for you.
Learn + Do: Child development fundamentals paired with immediate solutions and activities. Written by early childhood experts.
Shop + Play: We take the guesswork out of buying toys that are educational and fun. Expertly sourced. Better and fewer.
“It’s that awesome sound in my brain when I learn something and drop a marble into my Marble Jar!” Mind blown. Sage words from my 3-year old.
A Plinkit is that feel-good connection between what we learn and what we do. That spark that goes off in our brains when something makes sense. So as you journey through childhood and life with your child, keep learning, keep doing, keep playing – and then Plinkit those kernels of wisdom into your own Marble Jar. As my kids grow, my jar (and my heart) get fuller.
